NASA's Project Constellation and Ares I

Ares I is a booster component of the United States' NASA Constellation project. Its intended use is to launch the crew capsule vehicle named Orion. (The cargo will be launched by a separate launch vehicle called Ares V.) NASA's Ares I booster has a much lighter lift capacity than its fellow Ares V booster.

NASA originally developed Project Constellation to provide replacement crew and supplies to the International Space Station. NASA also plans to send astronauts to the Earth's moon and, with luck, also to the planet Mars.

The Ares boosters were named after the Greek god Ares, the god of war. However, the name Ares was not chosen because of his association with war, but rather because of his identification with the Roman god of war, Mars.

NASA has plan to design and create a number of other boosters and space vehicles for use during their Constellation project. These will replace Space Shuttle.
